In that sense, abstinence-only education (whether related to drugs and alcohol, or sex, or anything else) sends the message that the students are not to be encouraged to think for themselves or work at becoming ethical decision makers, but are just to "follow instructions." Another part of the hidden curriculum I suppose. Withholding information just never seems like a smart strategy, especially when trying to teach people how to make responsible decisions. And most have excellent radar for when they're being handed a bunch of BS. In a previous life, I did drug and alcohol education, mostly with teens (back in the late 70's).
